A 17-year-old girl, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, died after a gunman shot her while walking home on Thursday night in Little Haiti.

According to Miami Police, Lexsis Ray was walking down the street at Northwest 64th Street and 2nd Avenue about 11 p.m.

The passenger of an SUV jumped out of the vehicle with a high powered rifle, and aimed for 19-year-old John Baker, who was walking behind the teenage girl on the opposite side of the street and opened fire.

When the gunfire erupted, Baker ran away in order to dodge the bullets. Unfortunately, the teenage girl was struck multiple times.

The SUV took off in an unknown direction.

Both victims were rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in extremely serious condition. Ray died at the hospital. Baker remains in critical condition.

Police say more than 40 bullet casings were left on the scene. In addition to both victims being shot, bullets also hit a car and a house.

"I was in bed sleeping and I heard some gun shots and I jumped on the floor and I heard guns going and I told him that something went through my window and I saw the holes coming through my windows," said a woman whose house was hit by the bullets.

Police say the motive for the shooting is still unknown and they are looking for information from any possible witnesses.
